Soul Food 4 All…SOMETHING
HOT’S COOKING AT THE
HORNIMAN
THIS AUTUMN…
WHAT:
A MASTER CLASS IN 'NOUVELLE CARIBBEAN’ COOKERY WHERE:
HORNIMAN MUSEUM & GARDENS WHEN:
SATURDAY 5TH OCTOBER 2002 Places are now fully booked. DETAILS: Fresh from feeding the likes of Michael Winner
(film director), Kenny Anthony (the Prime Minister of St. Lucia), and soul
songstress Desiree at the exclusive Ladera Resort Hotel, in the sunny
Caribbean island of St. Lucia, the award-winning Chef
Orlando returns to British soil to tantalise our tastebuds at this
annual cookery event. Now in its third year, SOUL FOOD 4 ALL is a masterclass in ‘Nouvelle Caribbean’ cookery, which includes demonstrations of appetisers, main course, and desserts for people who enjoy vegetarian, fish, or meat dishes. Despite his youth, Chef Orlando has over 20 years
catering experience, and is the proud creator of the ‘Nouvelle
Caribbean’ concept - which combines the traditional flavours of the
Caribbean with the French style of nouvelle cuisine.
As the talented chef explains: “I call it fusion cooking, using
authentic ingredients and presenting food to appeal first, to the eyes, and
then allowing people to relish the tastes, textures, and aromas.” Throughout the session there will be opportunities for
participants to taste the variety of mouthwatering dishes produced, which in
the past has included an appetising menu of Sweet Potato and Pumpkin Soup,
Flying Fish and Avocado Salad, 7th Heaven Lamb, Jerk
& Ginger Chicken Wings, and Roasted Banana with Mango Coulis…to
name just a few This year’s event promises to
be better than ever, and is a unique occasion as it is being held in the
beautiful, relaxing surroundings of the newly refurbished Horniman Museum in
Forest Hill. Event organiser,
Patsy Leacock states: “The day marks a truly unique time in the
Horniman’s history, as it will be the first time that a cookery event has
ever taken place there. She continues: “Soul Food 4
All is more than just a cookery class.
It is a unique social occasion that is both educational and
entertaining…and attracts children, teenagers, adults, and pensioners
whose contributions all adds to what amounts to a thoroughly enjoyable
experience. The event is aimed at beginners and experienced cooks, and
EVERYONE with an interest in Caribbean food, culture, and
tradition…regardless of their ability or cultural background. ” The event is one of the many specialised activities organised by Platform 1, a youth, advice, and counselling centre based in Forest Hill, and receives financial support from Lewisham Youth Service, the London Borough of Lewisham, Lewisham College, and Lewisham Shopping Centre. To ensure access to those members of the community normally excluded from participating in cultural, social, and economic life, this year’s concessionary prices have been subsidised by the Horniman’s Education Department. If you are a teacher
or lecturer who is interested in booking a demonstration at
your school/college, please contact Patsy to discuss your needs. Contact
