New
rules for Caribbean food exporters to the USA

WASHINGTON,
USA: The Food and Drug Administration of the USA has issued
two interim final rules that will affect Caribbean companies
that manufacture, process, distribute, grow or export food
products for the US Market.
Under
the interim final regulations implementing the Bio-terrorism
Act of 2002, "food" is defined to cover all human
and animal food regulated by the FDA, including food ingredients,
dietary supplements, fresh produce, fish and seafoods, alcoholic
beverages, live animals to be processed into food, animal
feed and pet food.
In
addition, companies must also designate a "US agent"
who must live and maintain a place of business in the US,
and be physically present in the US.
Companies
will have until December 12, 2003 to register by completing
the Form FDA 2537 by logging on to the FDA website.
