Restaurants of Jamaica - New KFC

Before you get too excited by the name of this multi-million pound company - this news item is about Restaurants of Jamaica  opening another KFC in Jamaica.

'Restaurants of Jamaica' is a company which started in 1972.   It opened its first KFC restaurant in 1973 at 170 Old Hope Road,  Kingston 6.   Basically the company  has a large number of its premises dedicated to Western fast food franchises.  They are also franchise holders for Pizza Hut.

They are due to open a second Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Mandeville in November 2002.   Millions of dollars are being invested into the project, including J$35 million to erect the 5,000 sq ft building to house kitchen, dining and play areas.   Millions more had to be spent on equipment and fittings.   Boasting under-basement parking facility, dual-level dining area and play area,  the restaurant will be a competitive enterprise in the town.   Let's hope it does not put existing traditional food businesses in the town, out of business.    Many cannot compete with these facilities.

KFC will then have 24 branches in Jamaica.    The new branch in Mandeville will be the largest,  and will be placed in a location that will allow it to tap into the pedestrian market and grab a bigger slice of the fast food business.    Mandeville is a mid-island town.   The site is close to the transport centre and produce market.   Construction began in February.

Could someone please tell me if Restaurants of Jamaica also own franchises of restaurants that sell Jamaican food.

Mark Myers,  managing director of Restaurants of Jamaica said recently,  "Based on market analysis conducted, we found we were not capturing a large percentage of the market."

You can't beat a good pattie,  or rice and peas and curry.     On my recent visit to Jamaica,  it was interesting to see KFC also selling Rice and Peas,  and Coconut Water.
