Caribbean
Organic Products
Press Release
from Denzil Phillips.......
DENZIL
PHILLIPS INTERNATIONAL the UK in association with BUSINESS
SUPPORT NETWORK in St Lucia has recently been awarded a contract by
the
ACP-EU organisation PROINVEST to design a business strategy to promote
organic and health foods from the Caribbean.
The aim of the project is to develop a commercial platform to sell
Caribbean organic products both regionally and internationally. The
project will focus on three countries Trinidad/Tobago, Barbados and
Jamaica where organic growers associations have already been formed
and through which help on growing and certification will be channelled
Organic work in other islands will be gradually be integrated through
these three "hubs"
Based on our experience with with Caribbean herbs and medicinal plants
we plan to identify and support one or two key entrepreneurs
in each country who will act as "champions" to drive forward
any commercial activities and provide the marketing force
for exports. These champions would combine to form some commercial
entity to build an effective brand to market regionally and overseas
and
to be the platform for any technical and marketing assistance from CDE
and Proinvest (the EU agencies that are funding this project )
Our ideas on the production range will depend on whether we
are talking the local/regional or the international market
While there may be some potential for fresh organics in the local
hotels and supermarkets in richer areas of the Caribbean for the
export market we must concentrate on niche value added processed or
semi
processed products. Our first ideas for organic exports are
Herbal teas and infusions
Spices and essential oils
Chocolate and confectionary products,
Speciality health foods and drinks(seamoss),
Sauces and seasonings
Jams and preserves
