Nyla Morrison - Caribbean Cookbook  Author

Creative cooking is the rule in Nyla's kitchen. This isn't surprising as Nyla, a first generation American, has as her heritage, the cultural traditions of Barbados, Guyana, Trinidad, St. Lucia and Panama to draw on.

Nyla's considerable cooking talents were developed watching her parents create wonders in the household kitchen as she grew up. This early introduction to Caribbean cooking, family encouragement and a flare for creativity have brought Nyla's book to the pages of the New York Times Book Review and Caribbeat Magazine.

The book " Minna Cooks Caribbean"   is dedicated to her mother's delicious cooking.

MEET MINNA

Minna Lagonterie Gittens came to the United States on the S.S. Vestris as a youngster in 1915. Her parents, grandparents, and great grandparents were from Guyana, Barbados, St. Lucia, and Panama. Minna met and married LeRoy Gittens of St. John Parish, Barbados in New York City. They have two children; David Gittens, Artist and Designer and Nyla Y. Morrision, Health Educator and author of Minna Cooks Caribbean.

During the 1950s and 1960s Minna designed and prepared artistically inspired wedding cakes for many brides. Her pedestal wedding cakes were adorned with roses of all shapes and sizes, and swans swimming on a mirrored lake. Every year, family members could always count on receiving packages of English fruit cake in their gift boxes during the Christmas season. Her finger food specialties such as codfish cakes and beef patties remain today as two of "Minna's best treats" in Brooklyn, NY.

Minna's life is devoted to family, friends, and community in Brooklyn. As a member of the Board of Directors of Decatur-Stuyvesant Senior Center, Dance Instructor and Community Activist, she has received many certificates of commendation for meritorious service from New York City.
