Longview Good Restaurant Report: Lydia's |
|
Lydia's Caribbean Cuisine. It was an outstanding ratings
period for Longview restaurants this time around as eight establishments
were awarded perfect scores by the health department. With more than 100
restaurants in Gregg County, the choices for dining out abound, and any new
business has to have an edge. Lydia Rowell has one: Caribbean food. "When I come to
Longview one of the first things I noticed was that all the restaurants
were always packed with cars and East Texans like to eat out," says
Trinidad native Lydia Rowell, owner of Lydia's Caribbean Cuisine. She opened in May with
something that was very unusual to East Texas: Serving curry spiced foods
and other exotic dishes, and the specialty jerk chicken. "People always make fun of
it and say jerk chicken is it cooked by a jerk , no its a spice you
use," says Rowell. The spice is the key, and she's already made some
believers. "I like the fact that I
can taste the difference spice and that another thing I like about Caribbean
food and that's place you can taste it so yes, I like spice" said
customer Brenda Campbell of Longview. Along the way, she's won fans who've
given her unusual compliments. Caribbean food oddly enough has
a connection to Texas. Colonizing Spaniards were the first to notice
the West Indians were grilling their food outdoors.. "They were cooking
on a grate called a barboa , and from that origin the word bar-b-que came
from," said Rowell. As winter sets in, Rowell hopes
a touch of tropical paradise will become a hit. Other perfect scores given
out in the Longview inspections went to: Burger King at 3511 McCann road,
Taco Bueno at 3314 North 4th street, Whataburger at 1204 Alpine, Brenda's
Good Eats at 1809 West Loop 281, Carlito's at 2517 Judson road, Mama Moose
Deli at 2718 Gilmer road and the Tree Frog Deli at 1811 Judson road. Source http://www.kltv.com |
