Any
real rastafarian is a vegetarian, eating what is known as
Ital foods - natural and vital.
Ital
foods are basically those that are served as raw as possible,
without any chemicals such as those found in canned or other
processed foods. Some factions within the rastafarian
movement will eat fish, but not shelfish, as they are considered
scavenger of the sea. Also, no fish longer than 12 inches
can be eaten. Liquor, milk, coffee and soft drinks
are seen as unnatural. Pork is definitely shunned as
an unclean meat, not to be touched, or to come in contact
with in any manner.
Additives,
preservatives and processed foods are not considered to be
Ital, and are only eaten if there is no other choice.
Salt is not Ital. White flour is also not Ital.
Soya or coconut milk is preferred to cow's milk. All
manner of herbs and spices are Ital, and are used to full
advantage.
