Quite an easy place to find, Indies, in Greenwich, was also easy on
the eye. Placed between a unisex hair salon and an Internet café, Indies
Bistro and Bar stands out if only because of the vibrant colour scheme of a
blend between shades of mango-orange and red. This colour scheme, off-set
with cream walls, is repeated inside the cosy enclaves of the restaurant
which has a discreet take-away that in no way infringes on the main sit-down
area. If anything,
it’s not until you’re on the way out that you realise there is a
take-away service.
The
interior is warm and inviting, there’s a bar and more dining space for
larger parties and functions downstairs; the lighting is bright enough not
to be intrusive but not so bright it startles; the seats are comfy and
colourful paintings by African-influenced artists adorn the walls. Plants
are kept to a minimum, but you can be guaranteed flowers and miniature
candles on every table. The ambience is fantastic. Now for the cuisine!
For
starters, calaloo-filled, goat cheese pancakes with tomato sauce and grilled
cheese topping open your taste buds. The buffalo wings were slightly sweet
and sticky, so be prepared to get your fingers royally messy - but it’s
worth it.
I’d
also recommend the salmon fish cake, crispy on the outside, succulent and
tasty inside, this is served with a tantalising peppery pineapple and mango
salsa relish. Be warned, you’ll want seconds, but we forced ourselves to
hold it down for the main course, which did not disappoint.
Our
main course was Indies own original creation, mango chicken with sweet
potato mash and mango sauce. Never has a knife cut through meat so swiftly,
proof of its tender succulence or our greed. It melted on the tongue - very
More-ish.
Thirty-two
islands in the Caribbean are represented at Indies, from Trini rôti to
Jamaican patties, and Indie’s signature dish. A Brazilian chef trained by
Caribbean’s provided these delicacies in an open kitchen which not only
gives good visual access to the kitchen, but also the sights, sounds and
tantalising aromas of the food being prepared.
There
is a theory that if you want to diet and lose weight, you just smell the
food you wish to eat and you’ll be fulfilled. It’s a lie. Pass the knife
and fork please!
Highly
recommended: Indie’s special concoction of rum punch, blended with fruit
juices and rum taken from a 20-strong rum selection from as far afield as
Belize, Jamaica and Barbados.
