Great dining, entertainment, Caribbean flavor, classy atmosphere and great location are some of the things two new Brooklyn restaurants - Sugarcane and the JRG Fashion Café and Restaurant - have in common.

Both establishments are on Flatbush Ave. where Park Slope borders Prospect Heights.

Sugarcane owners Charmaine Gumbs and Gaspa Rodriguez dreamed of creating a restaurant they'd want to go to - one that was "stylish, had a nice setting, live music sometimes and a Sunday brunch."

About six weeks ago, their dream became reality - the Sugarcane Restaurant at 238 Flatbush Ave. (between Bergen St. and Sixth Ave.).

"We were looking for the kind of place that we would go to," said Charmaine's sister, Phoebe Gumbs, who oversees food, kitchen and catering duties. "We were trying to show that we [Caribbean people] are stylish and sophisticated," she said.

Sundays are special, featuring a pan jazz brunch and reggae in the evening.

Fashion and food

The JRG Fashion Café and Restaurant, at 177 Flatbush Ave. (between Fifth and Atlantic Aves.), offers dining, atmosphere and chic - fashion, models and designers.

"We decided to fuse fashion with food and music," said Guyana-born Fitzgerald Giddings Jr. of the fashion café.

JRG Entertainment, a group of Brooklyn-based entertainment and production companies, will use the café for a number of events, including runway fashion shows.

Giddings said the works of cutting-edge urban designers are exhibited daily throughout the establishment on mannequins and in photographs.

On the last Thursday of every month, the café is scheduled to hold a mini fashion show to provide further exposure for designers.

Upcoming events include Monday night live jazz shows, starting tomorrow, a Super Bowl party next Sunday, "A Passion for Love" Valentine's affair Feb. 15 and a "What Is Sexy!" summer fashion show on March 29.
