The Caribbean Cuisine Consortium in ‘Destination Brixton’

It is said that every great idea has its time. The time has surely come for the food of the Caribbean to take its place in the hearts and minds of the greater British public.

‘Destination Brixton’, 11-20 July, will present the long-awaited opportunity to display the most nutritious food that our bodies can imbibe. This is no idle boast: the agriculture is renowned for its purity of origin. The mass of people are spared the rigours of genetic modification - thus we eat healthily and from a large supply of fresh produce. It also has to be said that food is an affordable commodity in the Caribbean. We also have a global cultural base since every race of people on earth is represented in that little piece of ‘spit and dust’. So there has been a cross-fertilisation of cultures for the best part of half a millennium.

June 1, 2003, an historic assembly at the Savoy Hotel in London’s West End witnessed the formation of a collective dedicated to advocating the wholesome goodness of Caribbean food and drink. The Caribbean Cuisine Consortium (CCC) will make its mark on the British palate to let it know that we have moved out of the domestic kitchen, so to speak, and now produce our favourite delicacies in industrial quantities. This implies rigid quality control, consistency of supply, widespread distribution and much creativity in the range of items to be enjoyed.

July 11-20, Windrush Square will be the site for the first outing of the Consortium. Nine of its members will be trading under its stylish banner to provide visitors with bottled fruit drinks, herbal teas, patties, fruit salad, jerk chicken seasoning and a mango smoothie. Brixton, Britain,  has never seen anything like it.   All you have to do is make Destination Brixton your objective and come prepared to enjoy.    See you there!
