London Carnival Industry Seminar
Friday 26 November 2004 @ City Hall .... 2.30pm - 9.30pm

London's first 'Carnival Industry Seminar', will formally launch the final report of the Mayor's Carnival Review Group.

During the Mayor's first term in office, the following in-depth studies into the management, funding and development of the carnival industry in London in general and the Notting Hill Carnival in particular have been undertaken:

  • A strategic review carried out by the Mayor's Carnival Review Group;
  • An economic impact study, undertaken by the London Development Agency (the Mayor's agency for business and jobs); and
  • A study that accesses the feasibility of establishing a Centre for Carnival Arts and Enterprise - undertaken by the London Development Agency.

Taken together, all three reports provide a vision for promoting and supporting the carnival industry in London. The objective of the London Carnival Industry Seminar is to begin the process of engaging with key stakeholders and the wider carnival community on the value of the carnival industry to London's economy, the realisation of the Notting Hill Carnival's full potential and the co-ordination of a comprehensive industry development strategy.

Supported by the Arts Council England, the London Development Agency, Creative London and London Notting Hill Carnival Ltd, a range of workshops will also be offered on the following:

  • Developing a Caribbean Food and Drink Strategy for the Notting Hill Carnival
  • London Carnival Development Programme
  • Towards a Carnival Arts Education Network
  • Carnival 2005
  • Mobilising Caribbean Business Support for Carnival

This seminar will provide attendees with an opportunity to debate issues and shape policies that are critical to the development of London's carnival industry. It will also be followed by a 'Carnival @ City Hall' reception.

The participation and contribution of the Caribbean Cuisine Consortium at this event, is welcomed, given the Review Group's recommendation concerning the development of strategic alliances between the Notting Hill Carnival and the Caribbean food industry.

The Mayor's office and team would like Dawn Grant of CCC to lead a workshop on 'Developing a Caribbean Food and Drink Strategy for the Notting Hill Carnival'.

The outcomes of this workshop will inform and contribute to the implementation of recommendation 25 of the Mayor's Carnival Review.

CCC Members, and others who have an interest through catering at carnival in the past are invited to attend to share experiences, and put forward recommendations for future carnivals.
